Apfelklosse (german Apple Cake)

Ingredients

- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter
- 2 beaten egg yolks
- 5 cups apples, peeled, sliced
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon clove
- 2 egg whites, slightly beaten
Recipe
- 1 preheat oven to 350°f.
- 2 combine 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 teaspoons salt and baking powder. cut in butter as for pie crust. add egg yolks. press half in the bottom of a 10 x 15 inche jelly roll pan.
- 3 combine apples, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. spread over the bottom
- 4 crust. crumble remaining crust over the filling.
- 5 brush with egg whites and bake for 30-40 minutes.
- 6 serve with a vanilla custard sauce or ice cream.
